What race were these palaeo-Africans? They were undifferentiated Sub-Saharan Africans. The Mesolithic specimens at Wadi Halfa are often held as typical representatives: Who also would you say the earliest Caucasoids in Africa were? Perhaps the Iberomaurusians in North Africa. That culture dates back to at least 22,000 years before present. The Caucasoids in the Sahara, like the Kiffians and Tenerians, are more recent than that. They seem to have co-existed there with Proto-Negroids during the Green Sahara period, when the area was more habitable. The earliest Caucasoids in East Africa appear to be the Olduvai stock of ca. 15,000 BC. Here are some useful guide charts:
